Digital vs. Traditional Art

You know, I get really excited when I'm browsing through art and I come across a piece that is detailed. Complicated. And beautiful.

But then I see that it was created with Photoshop or Paint Tool SAI, or something like that. And then I'm like,

Now, please don't misunderstand me. I have nothing against digital artists. I don't think they have any less vision or talent than a traditional artist.

I just... have WAY more respect for a majorly talented traditional artist. For some reason, I always think less of a piece when I find out that it's digital. I know it's unfair to the artist, but it's just not something that I can help. I don't really like digital art. And I think it's sad that almost all the popular pieces I ever see here on DA... are digital pieces.

I know we live in the digital generation. I know that digital art is so much cheaper to produce, as well as less messy. There are a million different pros to digital artistry, including easily ridding your work of mistakes. I've even tried my hand at digital art, and I found that I was... less than impressed by it.

For me, creating art is about more than just making something others find appealing to the eye. My art is more about creating something. I feel connected to each and every one of my pieces, because each holds my fingerprint. The process of creation is so much better for me than the finished product. And if I took away the ability to touch my work, it's like I would take away an important part of the process.

It would take away my fingerprint.

Again, DON'T GET ME WRONG. I'm sure there are digital artists that still feel a deep connection with their work, even if it's done on the computer. I'm not saying it's impossible. Every artist is different.

But I think the main point I'm trying to make here, is that really good, traditional art, seems to be losing popularity. And I think it's kind of tragic.

For example. :iconsisero: is a very talented artist here on DA. I absolutely love her work. And according to her FAQ, a lot of people ask her what kind of illustration program she uses.

She doesn't use one. She mainly uses copic markers, gauche paint and various inks.

I think it's sad that people immediately think that her pristine work could only be done with an illustration program. Kudos to her for being able to trick people into THINKING that (even though that's not her intention).

I suppose you could say that this is just a pointless rant. But whatever.

IN OTHER NEWS:

I will be posting something later this evening. Something kind of different. Something kind of interesting. I broke my promise about posting Chapter One of Grigor by the end of October, but by God, I'm going to be posting SOMETHING.

This something is near completion. I will be gluing myself to my office chair this evening to finish it.

My feelings on Halloween?

I get that. (random person creepin on some journals) I've come to accept that digital art is something we all have to have. Eventually if we want to go pro when they look through our portfolio they are inevitably gonna ask if you can work with digital art. It bums me out that traditional art just isn't enough but I don't think digital art should consume you. Its just a skill you have to pick up just incase i client wishes for it.
